What is Knowledge Management

Knowledge Management (KM) is the process of creating, sharing, using and managing the knowledge and information of an organization. It refers to a multidisciplinary approach to achieving organizational objectives by making the best use of knowledge. it consists of the initiatives, processes, strategies, and systems that sustain and enhance the storage, assessment, sharing, refinement, and creation of knowledge.

Knowledge Management must, therefore, create and provide the right tools, people, knowledge, structures, culture, etc. so as to enhance learning. it must understand the value and applications of the new knowledge created; it must store this knowledge and make it readily available for the right people at the right time; and it must continuously assess, apply, refine, and remove organizational knowledge in conjunction with concrete long and short term factors.

Knowledge Management Technologies

The goal of a knowledge management system is to provide managers with the ability to organize and locate relevant content and the expertise required to address specific business tasks and projects. Some knowledge management systems can analyze the relationships between content, people, topics and activity and produce a knowledge map report or knowledge management dashboard.  knowledge management has some technologies we will discuss as follow.

Groupware is application software designed to help people involved in a common task to achieve their goals. One of the earliest definitions of collaborative software is “intentional group processes plus software to support them”.

Workflow systems is a software tool designed to help streamline routine business processes for optimal efficiency. Workflow systems involve creating a form to hold data and setting a sequential path of tasks for the data to follow until it is fully processed.

Content management is a set of processes and technologies that support the collection, managing, and publishing of information in any form or medium. When stored and accessed via computers, this information may be more specifically referred to as digital content, or simply as content. 

Document Management System is a system used to track, manage and store documents and reduce paper. Most are capable of keeping a record of the various versions created and modified by different users. The term has some overlap with the concepts of content management systems. 

Enterprise Portals is a framework for integrating information, people, and processes across organizational boundaries in a manner similar to the more general web portals. 

ELearning describes the cognitive science principles of effective multimedia learning using electronic educational technology. 

Scheduling Software allows businesses and professionals to manage appointments and bookings. This type of software is also known appointment booking software and online booking software. 

Telepresence refers to a set of technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance of being present, or to have an effect, via telerobotics, at a place other than their true location.
