Self-directed Learning Steps

In the areas of learning, the concept of self-directed learning has emerged. It is responsible for identifying what you need to learn and then learning the different learning methods that suit you. It is also an important means of professional and career development. This has some steps we will discuss in this article as follow.

There are four steps in this process we will discuss them as follow:

 Estimate readiness to learn

Students need to evaluate their learning skills for a successful study. In this step, students will self-assess their current situation, school habits, family status, and support network both at school and at home, and finally, evaluate past experiences with independent learning.

The student should also learn his or her own learning habits, such as does he learn better alone? Or when there is a teacher telling him what to do? Is he patient, disciplined, good at managing his time? Finally, he can use learning tools to evaluate his situation.

Set learning goals

The student should find motivation as learning for learning is not enough, so determining the goals that drive the student to learn is important. the student should define learning goals. Learning objectives include:

  • Goals for the unit of study.
  • Structure and sequence of activities.
  • Timeline for completion of activities.
  • Details about resource materials for each goal.
  • Details about grading procedures.
  • Feedback and evaluation as each goal are completed.
  • Meeting plan with the advising instructor.
  • Agreement of unit policies, such as a policy on a late assignment.

Engage in the learning process

After that, the student should identify the goals and paths he/she wants to enter into learning using SMART, which explains the learning factors in terms of measurable, possible, subject-specific, time-based. This will help the student maintain the path he has set when determining learning goals. Students also need to understand their approach to study:

  • The deep approach is responsible for understanding ideas, applying knowledge to new situations and using new examples to explain the concept, learning more than is required to complete the module.
  • Surface approach responsible for handling unit requirements, only learning what is required to complete the unit in good standing, and tend to scrap the examples and explanations used in the readings.
  • The strategic approach is responsible for learning what is required to pass examinations, keeping facts, and spending time from previous examinations.

Evaluate learning

It is a systematic process that involves a variety of activities. Informal evaluation is used by the teacher to provide feedback to students and to check for understanding in the teaching and learning process. the student should evaluate the self-learning process. to support this self-evaluation process, the student should:

  • Regularly consult with the advising instructor.
  • Seek feedback.
  • Engage in the reflection of their achievements.
