Difference Between Portfolio and CV

Portfolio is a compilation of materials that exemplifies your beliefs, skills, qualifications, education, training, and experiences. It provides insight into your personality and work ethic.

CV(curriculum vitae) is a written overview of a person’s experience and other qualifications for a job opportunity.

Difference Between Portfolio and CV

Portfolio should include

Statement of originality paragraph stating that this is your work and that it is confidential. It should also indicate if any parts of the portfolio should not be copied.
Work Philosophy A brief description of your beliefs about yourself and the industry.
Career Goals Your professional goals for the next five years.

Skill Areas Identify three to five of the major skill set areas you have that would be important for someone in your career field to have.

To present a professional portfolio you should follow these steps.

  • Table of Contents
  • If clarification of a particular section is needed, write a brief description of what is included in that section and why you have chosen to include it in your portfolio. Place the overview at the beginning of that section.
  • Use extra-wide 3 ring tabs with labels to separate each section so you can easily find the information during an interview situation.
  • Use a high-quality paper as well as a high-quality printer.
  • Use colored paper to draw attention to special samples, but use a soft, subtle color and only use a total of three different colors.
  • Put all pages in page protectors using front and back sides.
  • Place three extra copies of your resume and list of references in a protective sleeve to hand out during your interview.

CV should include 

Contact Details Make sure to use the phone number and email address that you use most often. 

Personal summary Ensure the first area at the top of your CV is a “summary of experience” and includes specific applicable experience in relation to the job ad as opposed to generalities.

Skills summary should include a skills section can capture their attention by making it clear what you can offer. Use a brief bulleted list of the skills and experience that you possess that are relevant to the role.

Work Experience Talk about business or project successes, therefore selling yourself by showcasing your skills and experience. This is your work history and includes paid work and any relevant volunteer or work experience placements. If you are a graduate, you may not have a great deal of work experience. highlight the relevant skills that you gained in your course or on work experience. 

Education and training Use your common sense here. If you have an advanced degree, few people are going to be concerned about your GCSEs. Make sure to also include any training courses that you have done that are relevant to the job that you are applying for.

Hobbies These are optional, but we always recommend to include a section on hobbies and interests, keep it very brief.

  • Identify the right personal details to include.
  • Add a personal statement. 
  • Know what to include in the skill section. 
  • Mention former jobs. 
  • Don’t forget your qualifications. 
  • Tailor it to the application.
  • Keep it up to date.
