In today’s society, there is no escape
Well, we were warned that this time it would come, probably from the early eighties onwards.
Yes, computers have finally got the upper hand and if you doubt it, we’re here to convince you
– but not because we want or because we can.
We want to convince you that if you do not take the necessary measures to
control that kingdom, you will be further behind than you could have ever imagined.
Computers are everywhere.
Take a moment to try and think of a place where you have not seen a computer in use.
From the small local store to the largest hospital, computers are at every service station,
grocery store, bank, restaurant, beauty salon and doctor’s office.
From the consumer’s point of view, you might not think it’s a lot to worry about.
But together with computers, we also infiltrated a small thing called “self-service”.
Today, there are more self-service resources than ever before and, in an effort to
synchronize them with the headquarters database, they are delivered via your unavoidable computer.
Here are some examples. The banking service is self-service through the desktop ATM. Service stations are self-serviced through a touch screen kiosk with menus. Most cash registers are Windows XP or Vista computers that send purchase details to headquarters via the Internet (or a small intranet). Having the weight, blood pressure and heart rate measured and recorded is now a digitized process. Also ordering a pizza is now a simple matter of dialing from a wireless cellphone and making some selections from a series of preprogrammed menus!
The important thing to understand here is that this phenomenon is not a new convenience: it is a new requirement. And if you have not jumped on the railroad car, you will have to face some problems. Just as this new way of life was once predicted, we anticipate that “the old ways” will slowly disappear.
We anticipate that all paper transactions (checks, money orders, etc.) and documentation (think of the old file system) will disappear. We anticipate that the chips will replace everything that has been transported from one place to another through the trusted post office. And we anticipate that homes will become less cluttered with piles of paper and that our natural resources will thrive as a result of it.
All of this sounds good and of course, but if you’re not a computer expert, you’ll feel a bit lost when the choice has passed and the revolution will be 100% complete. Fortunately, IT systems are designed in such a way that even a child can manipulate them. In fact, if you can remember that most systems are designed along the menu line and the selection of some options on these menus, you’ll do the same thing, no matter how many buttons there are to push.
