Priorities, priorities, priorities!

I have a friend whose favorite slogan is “Organize, Deploy and Terrorize” and add “Priority” to that group.

Now it seems pretty simple at first, but when you start putting it on paper, strange things start happening. Entrepreneurs will begin to see their ideas take shape and direction, and even identify some obstacles.

As entrepreneurs, we have this strange system of maintaining our goals, visions and modus operandi in our heads and not on paper. It’s not a safe path to failure, but think about when you need a solution for your business. You would not be able to get one until you spent about a week training with you. Instead, let’s put the slogan on which to work now and put it on paper before having that need.

ORGANIZE – Put your current operational procedures on paper in order.

Any format you like will do – it could start with time to open the office / store or the order

in which you perform your daily activities.

Whatever your particular company needs to work and produce.

Think about how and what you do every day that brings you to success, and put it on paper.

This is where you will also include your “goals” and your plan to reach them.

PRIORITY – Here’s where I post this article.

Once you know what it takes to perform your day-to-day operations, you can prioritize tasks based on their importance.

What must be done first, and what second.

To explain it in a simple way, it is not possible to open a shop for businesses before having the cash change in the cash register.

Apply this line of reasoning to your business operations.

DEPUTIZE – This is the next article on your sheet indicating who will execute / perform which

job or activity.

What do you expect from them every day and who takes over if they are not available?

If you have not assigned special responsibilities to your staff, perhaps now is the time

to evaluate each person to determine who would do the best job.

(As an entrepreneur, we tend to think that no one else can do a better job than we do, but you can not do everything – and now it’s time to delegate.

LAND – Perhaps this is too hard a word to use.

What I mean is that once you have assigned someone an assignment that allows them to run with it, do not put it on their way, but keep track of progress.

If you assign a particular job to a person, have him handle it but keep a tickler file so that you can follow to see what has been done.

This is not playing “Big Brother”, but making sure the ball is not dropped and the disaster is deflected.

Once you’ve done this exercise, you’ll be amazed at how clearly you start to see how many

of the goals you’ve had at the start of your business have been achieved successfully and

which still need work in the coming months.

You might even be surprised at how well you’ve done so far.

As entrepreneurs we like being the “Captain of our ship”, but remember that even a Captain

needs a crew to sail the boat and take it to the port safely.
