An ancient Chinese proverb says: “Find a job you like to do and you will not have to work
a day in your life”.
The meaning is that you will be so busy enjoying your work that you will not consider it
working at all.
Certainly this is a realistic statement and we could add that a person who enjoys his
work is probably happier and a person better than one who considers work a chore or,
worse still, a necessary discomfort.
It has been repeatedly claimed by the philosophers that the purpose of life is to seek
pleasure and avoid pain.
Looking at it this way, it is obvious that humans automatically look for what gives them pleasure.
In that case it must be true that we look for a job that we like rather, even if it might not
pay very well, rather than choose a less pleasant job that pays well.
The topic here seems simplistic: is it always possible?
Can we all find jobs that are truly enjoyable?
One certainty is that money is also important.
There can be little happiness for someone who does not have enough money.
For a person to enjoy life he certainly needs money, and if the means to get money are
somehow unpleasant – like working in a mortuary – or even difficult – how to work as
a worker, we can say that he should give up his job and are you looking for
a job that you would like?
An immediate difficulty that comes to mind would be that if we all look for jobs
that are pleasant, there are jobs that nobody will find pleasant and no
one would like to do them.
What will happen to the country – and the world – if everyone wants to be musicians and
nobody wants to be a mortician or a coal miner? Certainly there are jobs that nobody can
have fun doing.
A good suggestion might be that we should learn to enjoy what we are doing, rather
than looking for what we would like to do.
This may not be as unreasonable as it seems.
It is like saying that if you can not marry someone you love, then learn to love the person you will marry.
It should be easy to learn to love a job that gives you a lot of money.
You could think of all the pleasures you can have and understand that it is
the job that makes them possible and from there the hob is actually enjoyable,
Psychologists tell us that what gives us pleasure is a matter of programming.
We have been programmed to listen to a certain type of music; like certain foods and even people.
If this is true, it would be possible to plan to enjoy our work, whatever they are.
So, if there is a well-paid job that we can not see as enjoyable,
but that gives a lot of money, we can see it as enjoyable.
So, we could say that even if it is true that enjoying a job is more important than
earning money, it would be wonderful if we enjoyed the job and earned
a lot of money from it.
Enjoying ourselves is a question of attitude: we can find fun everywhere if we look pretty well.
But if a final choice is given that we can only have one or the other,
I agree that enjoying a job is more important than money.
